Canon announces Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera

Canon has announced an update to our favorite point and shoot camera, the Canon PowerShot S90. The S90 was ultra popular with enthusiasts and even with professional photographers as many love to use it on weekends, vacations and as their, ‘it’s always with me’ camera. Its compact, pocketable design deliveres high quality, DSLR like photographs along with some of the sharpest SD videos from any still camera sold.

The new Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera also features a super fast and bright wide angle f/2.0 lens with 3.8x optical zoom but is a hair thinner and lighter. It also adds a new optical hybrid image stabilization system and can now shoot 720p HD video!

Like its predecessor, the S95 is also equipped with RAW image capture, the popular control ring (see photo below) for manual control, and a 3-inch LCD screen with an anti-scratch coating.

The Canon PowerShot S95 is the first Canon camera to feature an in-camera, HDR scene mode to help capture the full dynamic range of a scene that consists of very dark tones and bright highlights. With the use of a tripod, one push of the shutter button yields three sequential images with various exposures, and then combines them into a single optimized image within the camera. As a result, the image showcases a better range of depth and detail found in natural settings!

I feel it’s worth pre-ordering the S95 now as there are times I wished my S90 could shoot HD video. I’m also very anxious to try the in-camera HDR and see what else has been improved on this already near perfect pocketable camera. But if HD video or in-camera HDR shooting, or the slight weight drop and thinner body isn’t very important to you then we still strongly recommend the Canon PowerShot S90. Now is a very good time to jump on it as it’s being discounted ahead of the new Canon PowerShot S95 hitting the streets.

Please subscribe to our RSS feed or email updates (at the top of the page) as we’ll will have a full review of the S95 after receiving it.
